Del Rio: Just find a way to win the next one

The Raiders returned from their two-week swing in Florida feeling much better about their status than they were heading out. A split wasn’t what head coach Jack Del Rio had hoped for but he was mostly satisfied as the team went into the bye week with a 4-5 record. Del Rio talked with reporters about some of the good things that happened and some of the things that have gone wrong for his players.

Q: You talked a lot about the team getting it’s mojo back. Did that happen against the Dolphins?

A: I feel we are. There are still things we need to clean up and be better at, really in all three phases. I think what I saw was I saw glimpses of what I know we can be as a football team when we put all three phases together and that’s really what we’re looking for.

Q: In terms of getting the attempts to get the running game going, is it a mindset?

A: It can be. I think you saw examples of it (against Miami) where there wasn’t a lot of efficiency early. We had some short gains, but we stuck with it. I think, especially when you’re in the game like that and it could go either way, to continue to bang at them is important. I think it’s important to establish it. When you look at our football team, the strength of our football team is in the trenches. That’s where, when Reggie (McKenzie) and I got here Day 1, we talked about wanting to build our trenches strong, offensive and defensive lines. That’s the strength of our football team.

Q: What does the defense need to do to improve?

Gruden feeling the heat?

Gruden feeling the heat?

“I know there is a big bull’s-eye on my chest, certainly. If the people want to use that as an incentive, then so be it. I worked for Al Davis in 1998. That was pressure. I was 34 years old. I’ve dealt with pressure before. I don’t really feel pressure. I love the excitement and thrill of competing, and I can’t worry about things I can’t control in that regard. I know people will want to step on me and beat me, and that is just the way this league is.”
