Todd Bowles speaks Dan Leberfeld responds
Q: What is your assessment of JoJo Natson’s progress so far?
Bowles: He’s getting better every week. I think he’s securing the ball very well. He’s close to having big gains, we just have to keep working at it.
Leberfeld: I think the Jets struck gold here. He’s just what teams are looking for in a returner — amazing short-area quickness, world-class speed and very tough. Every time he touches the ball Natson has the potential to make something magical happen. The former Akron star looks like he can be special.
Q: Would you like for Josh McCown to return next season?
Bowles: I’m not going to talk about next year until this year is over.
Leberfeld: Bowles is probably not going to talk about this when the year is over, either. Do teams generally tell us their off season plans right after the season ends? Rarely.
Last year, in his midseason press conference, GM Mike Maccagnan told us repeatedly he wouldn’t be able to answer that until after the season, and then at his press conference after the season, some reporters brought these questions back to him, and he still wouldn’t answer them.
It’s not a big deal, and I don’t care, but I just wanted to clear that up before I continue. They aren’t going to give us insight on their plans for their free agents after the season.
But as far as I’m concerned, it’s a slam dunk that the Jets should bring back McCown next season.
Without him this year, I’m not sure they win a game.
He did a terrific job leading the Jets’ offense, which the psychics left for dead before the season. He displayed good accuracy, pocket presence and arm strength. He also was a godsend for the Jets’ locker room as a leader and mentor.

FIRST DOWN- A lot of potential, but a lot to learn

(Marcus Maye) can do it all. I would feel comfortable with him (at free or strong safety). He’s a guy that, to me, he can play deep, he can play the half field, he can play the middle third, he can do that and you feel comfortable with it. I think he’s got range, speed and athleticism. I think he’s got ball skills and instincts to be a deep safety. But I think he’s got enough size and girth and want-to and courage to play in the box. It’ll be fun to utilize all the things that he does. He can cover tight ends; he can cover some of the wide receivers in this league.

Jets hope initiatives will increase winning edge
Aside from adding as many good players as possible to help the Jets improve, coach Robert Saleh and GM Joe Douglas are trying to turn over every stone to find extra ways to give their team a winning edge, and two examples of this were announced over the course of the offseason, with the additions of a game management coach (Matt Burke) and the installation of an Athletic Care and Performance Department. Let’s take a closer look at these two moves and how they might help the Jets:
