Darnold To Wear Protective Device Entire Season

Mind Games: Quarterback Sam Darnold said working with sports psychologists helps him focus better.
Darnold To Wear Protective Device Entire Season

Q: How did the extra padding you are wearing to protect your spleen help in the (Dallas) game?

A: I took a few shots and it didn’t affect me at all and the pads worked great — super light, but also protected me well.

Q: What can you tell us about your 92-yard TD to Robby Anderson against Dallas?

A: The way the safety bit down on the run, I just knew I had to put it out there. Robby’s one of the best in the NFL at tracking the ball in the air, so I just had to put it out there in his vicinity and he would go out and catch it.

Q: What was your reaction to getting cleared to come back (from mono)?

A: I was just pumped to be able to go out there and play Sunday. It’s just, when you’re out that long, you realize how awesome the game is because you miss it so much.

Q: What is your conditioning like after missing so much time?

A: It’s good. The last couple of weeks when I was able to do some light conditioning. The training staff did a really good job of preparing me to come back - riding the bike, even walking outside, just doing as much as I could to get the heart rate up.

IN HIS OWN WORDS WITH DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR JEFF ULBRICH - Ulbrich breaks down Jets' defensive personnel

(Marcus Maye) can do it all. I would feel comfortable with him (at free or strong safety). He’s a guy that, to me, he can play deep, he can play the half field, he can play the middle third, he can do that and you feel comfortable with it. I think he’s got range, speed and athleticism. I think he’s got ball skills and instincts to be a deep safety. But I think he’s got enough size and girth and want-to and courage to play in the box. It’ll be fun to utilize all the things that he does. He can cover tight ends; he can cover some of the wide receivers in this league.

Jets hope initiatives will increase winning edge

Aside from adding as many good players as possible to help the Jets improve, coach Robert Saleh and GM Joe Douglas are trying to turn over every stone to find extra ways to give their team a winning edge, and two examples of this were announced over the course of the offseason, with the additions of a game management coach (Matt Burke) and the installation of an Athletic Care and Performance Department. Let’s take a closer look at these two moves and how they might help the Jets:
