THE DEATH OF PETER MCGOUGH
RON HARRIS
Though Peter passed away on December 29 of 2020 of stage 4 cancer, he was such a major part of our industry for so many years - 40! - that I would be remiss not to include the loss of this legendary journalist and editor. Peter was one of a kind: a brilliant writer/reporter, a true historian, a gifted storyteller, and one of the kindest, most generous men I have ever known. He was the Editor-in-Chief of FLEX magazine and in more recent years, the Senior Writer for MD. Many knew him as the man who discovered Dorian Yates, but the truth was that Peter helped legions of bodybuilders: giving them publicity, a voice, and offering priceless career and life advice. I will always miss his wit, wisdom, and positive energy.

THE DEATH OF ANDY HAMAN

The first major death to rock our industry this year was the passing of IFBB pro-Andy Haman on March 19 at age 54. Cause of death was a pulmonary embolism related to an elbow joint surgery just three days prior. Though Andy turned pro at the 2007 NPC Masters Nationals, he was far better known for his ebullient personality and intense, enthusiastic energy at expos and trade shows, where he often took on the guise of Mr. Incredible from the animated film. Prior to bodybuilding, the lowa native had been a national freestyle wrestling champion and runner-up at the World Championships, and he also coached wrestling and football for 14 years with multiple state championships to his credit. Haman was a devoted husband and father of four, and he and his wife Michelle and their children often delighted fans at expos as the entire family dressed up as The Incredibles. His son Sam posted the following on Facebook shortly after his father's passing: RIP: Anthony Joseph Haman/Dad/Mr. Incredible. We love you so much and you will be in our thoughts forever! No one was as strong, kind, silly, goofball wonderful person as you. Don't worry about mom and the girls I'll take care of them, just the way you did and taught me. #crazyfunalways

THE DEATH OF JOHN MEADOWS

John's death on August 8 at just 49 years old hit many of us hard, simply because he was one of the most genuine, humble, and generous people in the entire fitness industry, on top of being a wealth of knowledge and having one of the most rugged, densely muscled physiques in the world, with a level of grainy definition and detail rarely seen. A lifelong bodybuilder and a model in dedication and persistence, he began competing at just 13 years old and doggedly pursued pro status until finally earning it a full three decades later at 43 at the 2015 Team Universe. Most knew him by the nickname Mountain Dog, and he educated millions through his YouTube channel and website. John also founded Granite Supplements after being dissatisfied with the quality of his signature supplement line with another company. The lifelong Ohio resident was loved and respected worldwide for his integrity and sincere desire to help everyone reach their own fitness goals. He left behind his wife Mary and their twin sons, and John had also coached their youth football teams. Upon his passing, many of his clients including Shaun Clarida, Missy Truscott, Terrence Ruffin, Shanique Grant and Josh Wade expressed their sorrow on social media. One of the very few men who I honestly never heard an unkind word spoken about, Meadows will be sorely missed by all of us who were either fortunate enough to know him, or who he helped in some way through his vast knowledge of training, nutrition and supplementation that he felt compelled to share.

Are You Testosterone Deficient?

On a cloudy day, time moves less clearly than it does on a sunny day. Harken back to the summer days of youth, before the responsibilities of a job or family required one to pay attention to the passage of time. It wasn’t until the streetlights went on that one realized the sun had set and night had covered the neighborhood in a cloak of darkness. The activity on the streets settle as children are called in, even the dogs and squirrels sought shelter as they prepare for their nocturnal slumber.

Glycemic Index and Fat Loss

For many years we were told the keys to losing weight and staying healthy are to exercise and eat a low-fat/high-carbohydrate diet. The public evidently heeded this advice as epidemiological studies have shown that dietary practices of Americans have shifted accordingly. Yet, despite this shift, the incidence of obesity and diabetes in America has reached epidemic proportions, particularly in children and adolescents. This phenomenon has been explained as a result of an increasingly sedentary lifestyle and consumption of nutrient-dense food.

Fully Armed With The Big Rock

No, The Rock (Dwayne Johnson) didn't add the word Big to his name. Like in Star Wars lore, there is another. Another Rock, a bigger Rock. France's Morgan Aste, at 6-foot-3 and 315 pounds on stage actually should be renamed the Biggest Rock, right?
