Congratulations on Spider-Man: Homecoming — it looks like one of the best Spider-Man movies to date. How did you find out you’d won the role?

Oh thanks, buddy, I appreciate that. I was at home, scrolling through Instagram and Marvel had posted a photo of Spider-Man saying, “Go to our website and check out who the new Spider-Man is.” So, I freaked out, ran to my computer, went to the website and I was just lucky enough that it said my name. I went completely crazy — my poor dog was terrified and had no idea what was going on. It was an amazing day.

So the studio or director didn’t even call you to let you know?

They did afterwards but I already knew. They were like, “Oh, we just want to let you know you’re going to be Spider-Man.” I was like, “Yeah, guys, I know!”

How did you celebrate? Did you have a big one?

Yeah, it was a big one, my friend. It was a real big one.

Had you watched the previous Spider-Man movies and did you take anything from either Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield’s portrayals of the superhero?

Yeah, absolutely. I was a huge fan of those movies growing up and they were very valuable to me in the process of preparing for the role. I’m lucky in a sense that I’ve got five great movies I can take influence from and pick and choose what I want from those movies. So, it was a real help for me and I’m very glad I had them in my back pocket.

So how and what did you decide to put your own spin on playing Spider-Man?
