A Visit To The Dutch Poultry Museum In Barneveld
Fancy Fowl|February 2017

Brinsea’s Fiona Browne and Marc Braddock have been planning a visit to the Dutch Poultry Museum since the beginning of the year. Friday 14th October was world egg day and since the museum was celebrating this over the weekend it seemed a great time to visit.

A Visit To The Dutch Poultry Museum In Barneveld

The museum is probably the best dedicated poultry museum in the world and is located in what has historically been a world centre of egg production in the Dutch town of Barneveld, a small provincial town about 1 hour’s drive east of Amsterdam.

We were kindly shown around by Gerard Bruinhorst, one of the museum’s many passionate and interesting volunteers. Gerard has travelled the world with feed manufacturer Denkavit and still carries out work in feed formulations for organisations in some less-developed countries.

We were also fortunate to sit down with Gert Riezebos, one of the museum’s volunteer ‘Egg Doctors’ (a very knowledgeable poultry lecturer and local breeder of Groninger Meeuw, who dedicates time to meeting the public and answering technical questions).
