After developing an anxiety disorder, Keith Rieger founded the ultimate endurance event – the Kona Five
I’ve wanted to complete the Kona Ironman since I first saw it on TV in the 80s. I attended the University of New Mexico on a cross-country and track and field scholarship, which led to ultra-running, which then led on to triathlons and Ironmans. In 2014 I got a last-minute opportunity to do the Epic 5 Challenge (5 Ironmans, 5 Days, 5 Islands), which gave me the idea and confidence to develop my own event in 2016, where athletes complete the Kona course five times in five days. I originally thought it was a one-time event for me, but then I decided to share the experience with others, and started recruiting other athletes for Kona Five 2017.
