Actress Sofia Vergara, 47, is the first to admit she’s loving her life. Starting out in the Latin film industry 25 years ago, she made a name for herself playing hot TV mom Gloria Pritchett in our favourite mockumentary show, Modern Family. It first aired in 2009 and, this year, the Dunphy-Pritchett clan bid us farewell in their 10th and final season. But Sofia is excited about her future. “Playing Gloria helped launch my career; I know there’ll be other projects for me.” Sofia lives in LA with actor husband Joe Manganiello and has an adult son, Manolo, from her first marriage. I struggled when I first started looking for work in LA – no one could understand me. I went to audition after audition and got nothing. Apparently, there were no roles for Latin women, especially those with a strong accent. So I thought, “I’m going to have to change the way I talk.” I spent a lot of time and money trying to perfect an American accent, but became so obsessed with it that my acting went out the window. I thought about giving up on my acting dream, but decided to rather go for roles that suit me. Once I relaxed, it became easier. I’ve never changed anything about myself, and people seem to understand me just fine now.
No one took me seriously because of my looks and my accent. But that was all right, because I never really thought of myself as a serious actress. I was happy to make people laugh and bring a bit of personality and flair to a project. Who cares about Latin-women stereotypes? I just tried to be myself and I managed to make everything work to my benefit. That’s all anyone can do, really – use what God has given you and make the most of your potential.
