Ethereal, enigmatic, and a busy mom of four, Liv Tyler, 43, is enjoying every moment. Born in New York to her single mom Bebe Buell, Liv’s start in life was a little unconventional. Although she saw her mom’s boyfriend, musician Todd Rundgren, as her father, it was only when she attended an Aerosmith concert at the age of nine that she met her real dad, singer Steven Tyler. From then, he was a part of her life, there as she chased a modelling career before trying her hand at acting. She’s best known for her role as Arwen in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, and recently for playing Meg Abbott in The Leftovers. This month, she stars in space drama Ad Astra with Brad Pitt, and she's back in the third season of Harlots in October. Liv and her sports-agent fiancé David Gardner live in London with their kids Sailor, four, and Lula, three. She also has a son, Milo, 14, from an earlier relationship. David’s son Gray, 11, from his previous marriage, lives with them.
My mom was 23 when she had me.
When you’re a kid, you want your parents to be a certain way. Then, when you’re a parent yourself you think, “Wow, how did she do it?” A single mom at 23, living in New York City without all the tools she needed – she was remarkable. My mom always had a very optimistic approach, which is trendy nowadays. But way before there were self-help books and parenting guides, she just followed her heart, and I admire that.
The lifestyle in New York was crazy.
My mom was a young model and, ultimately, I think she was overwhelmed. She took me to Maine to live with my uncle and aunt – I’d stay with my grandparents, too. I had a very family-rich childhood, learning that you lean into your family, ask for help, and show compassion. My gran is still my best friend. It could have been different – I could have grown up alone in an apartment with a nanny.
