A Kosi Family Escape
Wildside Magazine|Summer 2016

When you’re looking for ideas for a family holiday, you seldom think of a rustic luxury resort as having activities for children, but Isibindi’s Kosi Forest Lodge is just one of those places. Kosi Forest Lodge offers kids the freedom to explore the great outdoors instead of being glued to the tv or other electronic devices.

A Kosi Family Escape

Situated on Lake Shengeza, a freshwater lake, just south of the Kosi Lake system which has been incorporated into the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, a World Heritage site, Kosi Forest Lodge, is the only private lodge in the park.

The lodge consists of six forest rooms, suitable for couples and two family rooms. All the rooms are en-suite and have a romantic outdoor shower and bath situated in a private enclosed boma area. The family rooms consist of two en-suite chalets which are linked by a short walkway, and they also share a common outdoor shower and bath area.

Learn and interact

While at Kosi Forest Lodge kids will get the opportunity to interact with nature and are guaranteed to come away with a new appreciation for their natural surroundings and all the surprises waiting in store for them around every corner.

Each evening as you make your way to dinner you are greeted by the sound of bushbabies that frequent the trees around the bar area. These animals are nocturnal and therefore love to come out in the evenings, encouraged by the smell of fruit which has been laid out for them. It is very seldom you see these creatures so close, so it’s a real treat for the kids and adults alike when they get to see them from such close quarters.

The bird hide is a new addition to Kosi Forest. With over 420 species of bird having been recorded in the area, Kosi Forest is a twitchers paradise. Common birds sighted in the camp include the brown scrub-robin, purple-banded sunbird, Flappet Lark, Livingstone’s Turaco, and the African Wood-Owl can often be spotted in the evenings. Rarities include Ayres’s hawk eagle, crab plover and the greater frigatebird.
