Here’s our bucket list guide to eight fabulous lakes around the world
Great Lakes

01 LAKE COMO Lombardy, Italy

This is a lake of glacial origin with celebrity status. It has an area of 146 square kilometres, making it the third-largest lake in Italy, after Lake Garda and Lake Maggiore. But it has always come first for Europe’s aristocracy, who have been flocking to its rocky-lined shore for centuries. From Roman times until today, the jet set have enjoyed its peaceful views plus the excellent restaurants. It’s most well-known current resident is George Clooney, who owns a villa overlooking the water, but Madonna, Gianni Versace, Ronaldinho, Sylvester Stallone and Richard Branson are other famous faces who have enjoyed the Italian beauty spot.

02 PLITVICE LAKES Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia

From green, to blue, to grey, to purple – the waters of this Croatian lake mutate in colour constantly due to minerals and sunlight. Waterfalls connect the 16 lakes, and the surrounding woodland, which are home to deer, bears, wolves and birds, making it look otherworldly.

03 LAKE LUCERNE Lucerne, Switzerland
