STYLE IS AN EXPRESSION OF THE IMAGINATION
Ryanne Stephanie Cheng Co and Maritess Garcia Reyes

They are trendsetters in their own right: mavericks by choice or classicists by definition. No matter the outfit, these luminaries prove they are always one step ahead

THE CLASSICIST

VANIA ROMOFF

The Manila-based fashion designer views style as self-expression and believes in “seasonless” dressing, where a good dress should be versatile enough to be worn and reworn in different ways. Her personal style reflects a celebration of the feminine and an appreciation of a woman’s body, its softness and sensuality. “A good outfit uplifts,” Romoff explains, saying that while she likes to feel comfortable in what she wears, it has to make her feel good, too. “Fashion celebrates life and the times. Dressing up should be treated as a form of self love,” she shares. Her style icon? Her daughter, Emilia.

BJ PASCUAL

He is no stranger to style; he has, after all, photographed some of the industry’s most darling and debonair. Yet, he’s chosen to be a style maverick, expressing himself in ways that make him feel comfortable. Gender constructs are neither a hindrance nor a consideration for his sartorial choices, as he’s often seen toting his signature accessory: feminine shoulder and handbags that he styles gracefully with oversized jackets and sweaters. He’s also been known to don colourful cropped tops and oversized jewellery to complement the look.

NADINE LUSTRE

This television and movie artist defines her style as “a mood”. She’s often spotted in streetwear, admitting that her go-to outfit is a tank top paired with white sneakers and jeans. “My outfits are always a bit boyish,” she admits. “But when I wear dresses or something [very feminine], I feel prim and proper. What I wear really affects my vibe.” The artist, whose sartorial choices are constantly on the headlines, loves to play with proportions, saying, “I’m an inverted triangle, which is why I love wearing bottoms that make my hips look wider.”

RIA PRIETO

“Style is very personal. It’s an outward expression of who we are inside,” says Prieto, who has been working as a lifestyle editor for two decades now. She likes to have fun with fashion and try not to overthink what she wears. “That way I am able to creatively mix random pieces,” she explains. Fashion uplifts her mood and the whole process of putting an outfit together is something she enjoys. “I’m amazed at the ability of fashion to transform and its power to lend confidence to the wearer.”
