Dans son discours au parlement britannique en avril dernier, la jeune militante Greta Thunberg a dit s’exprimer au nom des enfants trahis par les politiques et les électeurs ayant échoué à empêcher les changements climatiques, ainsi que de ces milliards d’enfants à naître, futures victimes d’un monde qui se réchauffe rapidement.

« J’ai 16 ans, je viens de Suède et je parle au nom des générations à venir, dit-elle. Mais il se peut que nous n’ayons pas d’avenir. »

Aucun responsable politique n’a osé atténuer la sombre force morale de ce message. Il aurait fallu pour ça faire preuve d’un grand courage. On a plutôt encaissé les accusations et promis de mieux faire.

Les propos de la jeune Suédoise ont mis en lumière le fossé profond qui sépare les générations en matière de politiques sur le climat : l’écart entre ceux qui ont le pouvoir d’agir et ceux qui devront vivre avec les conséquences de l’inaction des premiers. La crise du climat exige une réflexion qui tienne compte du long terme, alors que la politique électorale est plutôt sensible aux demandes actuelles. Les hommes et les femmes politiques ont beau parler de l’avenir, sans une modification de notre pratique de la démocratie, le véritable enjeu restera toujours le gain politique immédiat.

Jeunes et vieux sont comme deux tribus politiques adverses. En Angleterre, un sondage récent révélait que, pour près de la moitié des électeurs de 18 à 24 ans, l’environnement était la question la plus urgente de notre temps. Ils sont moins de 20 % les électeurs de plus de 65 ans qui partagent cet avis.
