A Gateway To Europe

Located in the city of Haarlemmermeer, merely 20 minutes away from Amsterdam city, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS) is the main international airport in the Netherlands that holds a special place in the European aviation business. It serves as the main hub for KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and other inter-continental airways such as Transavia, Amsterdam Airlines, Martinir, and Arkefly, connecting the place to many European airports. The operations of AMS are handled by the Royal Schiphol Group, which aims at connecting Netherlands to the rest of the world. In terms of traffic and number of flights, it often secures a spot in Europe’s top five airports. In 2016, it facilitated 63.5 million passengers to over 320 destinations through 111 airlines. The commercial movements increased to 479,000 and the cargo volume was almost 1.7 million tonnes. First started as a local airbase for the military in 1916, it only had a few barracks and a field that served both as platform and runway. In December 1920, civil airports finally started using the facility as a commercial airport.
