How To Guide Your Grandchildren

For all grandparents, there are steps you can take to develop a happy relationship with your children and grandchildren. It is important to establish some ground rules before you start and think about what it is you want to bring to your time and experiences together.

UNDERSTAND WHAT THE PARENTS WANT

Discuss and make clear what role your grandparenting should take. Respect their decisions on child-rearing, as they have the ultimate responsibility. Know the boundaries and give advice only when it is asked for, but offer help in any way. Talk to the parents about their rules for their child. Consistency is important for children: they need to know the behaviour limits and the rules they need to follow.
