We All Need Role Models!

Hands clenched, set look on her face – the public persona of Judy Murray is well known, and has resulted in much media attention for the mother of Britain’s most successful tennis star, Andy Murray.

“When the boys began to attract attention, most photographers and sports editors were men, so time and again we would see this tense and unflattering image of me,” says Judy.

However, Judy’s stint on Strictly Come Dancing relaxed her public face, and this was further eased by her fun appearance on Mrs Brown Live.

“I met Jenny, Brendon O’Carroll’s wife when we did Strictly,” she says, “so she has become a really good friend of mine. As I now know them quite well, that situation was quite comfortable – it was really good fun.” And of course, Judy’s mum came along too! “My mum was loving it. She took along her famous shortbread to give to them!”

Judy’s mother is a well known figure in her local area. “She still goes along to the tennis club and makes the tea on Saturday mornings. She’s very much involved.” And as Judy reveals in her recently published autobiography, Knowing The Score, she also has her hair done every week, in case her grandson has been successful and she wishes to appear on television looking her best!
