Irish author Paul Callan shares with Lily Ong on why he wrote The Brigadier’s Daughter.

The Book Of Love

We last interviewed you five years ago for your first book, The Dulang Washer. How has life changed for you since then?

Well, I have written a couple other books, Shadows Beneath The Fronds, and now, The Brigadier’s Daughter. As an Irishman, I have always been fascinated by Southeast Asia, particularly Malaysia and Singapore.

How did you come up with the plot for The Brigadier’s Daughter?

The Brigadier’s Daughter is a love story told in two timelines. The first part of the story is told through the perspective of the hero as an old man and the other is his reflections on his youthful love with a Eurasian girl—the titular brigadier’s daughter. Above all, I wanted to write a story that people from all ages could relate to, young or old, of the trials and tribulation of falling in love for the first time.
