RAMADAN is essentially a time of fasting, reflection and prayer. The ninth month on the Islamic calendar, it marks the first revelation of the Quran to prophet Muhammad. Typically lasting about 30 days, depending on the sighting of the crescent moon, it is regarded as one of the Five Pillars of Islam—when Muslims have to refrain from consuming food, drinking liquids, smoking, and engaging in sexual relations from dawn until sunset.
