Beginning this year, the government banned smoking at restaurants, following suit with many other countries around the world. Our experts shed some light on the positive effects of this ruling.

The smoking ban aroused mixed feelings among some Malaysians, but for Professor Dr Teo Soo-Hwang and Helmy Haja Mydin, there was no such ambiguity. Both agree that it was about time the ban was implemented and enforced, as not only does it directly benefit both smokers and non-smokers, it also ensures our national budget is put to better use. “The cost of treating smokers, as absorbed by our national healthcare scheme, is much higher than non-smokers,” elaborates Professor Dr Teo.
