She didn’t have a difficult life to begin with. Blessed with stable financial support, getting her hands on things she needed was never a struggle for her. Yet she was deeply addicted – to stealing.

Elisa Ahmad Mokhtar* appears mature and wise for her age. The 25-year-old has an unrevealed side to her life – she couldn’t resist the urge to steal even though she could afford all that she needed. Growing up in a family of five children and being the only daughter, Elisa had always been surrounded with love from her family. She decided to leave her hometown after finishing secondary school to work and fund her tertiary study.

Addicted to Stealing

“Neither my father nor my mother were opposed to the idea. They knew very well that I was capable of taking care of myself and my desire to work. I knew for a fact that they were more than willing to fund my studies but I didn’t want to live a life that’s smooth-sailing and without any challenges or obstacles,” she shares when we meet at a rehabilitation centre in her hometown.

Elisa had a chronic addiction to stealing. The moment she set foot in a shopping mall, there was always something attractive that caught her eye and she would be drawn to lay her hands on it. The excitement would build when she managed to get away with it unnoticed.
