Dr Fauziah Mohd Hasan divulges what it is like to be on the frontline of humanitarianism – and why she will never stop striving for peace even in the face of adversity.

Poon Li-Wei

Dr Fauziah Hasan, who is on the board of trustees for Humanitarian Care Malaysia (MyCARE), first catapulted to recognition when word broke out that a Malaysian doctor had been detained by Israeli authorities off the coast of Gaza. She was held in captivity for 22 hours alongside other women delegates from around the world, aboard the ship ‘Zaytouna-Oliva’ commissioned for the Women’s Boat to Gaza (WBG) mission. The rest of the nation fell into panic and worry for her wellbeing while she, ironically, remained calm and collected – thanks to hours and hours of gruelling training to prepare her for this mission. When asked what her aim was in risking it all to sail forth, she readily divulges, “To show solidarity with the people of Gaza, especially the women and children; to exert pressure on the Israeli government to uplift the decade-long blockade on Gaza; and to spread the message to the world that those in Gaza need help urgently.”
