From evoking nostalgic romance to constructing dream like narratives, the much anticipated Erdem for Nars Strange Flowers collection is bold yet demure. Audra Roslani speaks to designer extraordinaire Erdem Moralioglu about his latest collaboration.
There’s an inherently symbiotic relationship when the worlds of beauty and fashion collide. After all, both are practices in presentation, and can be done without the other. Yet, when done well together, both can create magical universes where the imagination is allowed to escape and dream. Having collaborated with Nars Cosmetics backstage for many of his shows over the years, it was only natural that Erdem Moralioglu, with his penchant for floral motifs, would explore the subject of feminine beauty in its entirety. Here, he talks exclusively to BAZAAR.
How does Erdem as a fashion brand translate itself to beauty?
The wonderful thing about beauty is that you can communicate a story with what you’re wearing on your face. And it’s clearly the same for fashion—you can tell a story with the clothes that you’re wearing. Make-up and clothing can be a uniform, it can be a mass, it can be a character, it can say so many different things. So it’s how we look to the outside world and the link between the two. They’re visual languages and the collection definitely showcases that, whatever it may be.
How did this Nars collaboration come about?
I began working with Nars over five years ago and we knew right away that we wanted to collaborate; it was just a question of when. It’s something that’s been so thrilling and such an interesting process.
Why is the collaborative collection named Strange Flowers?
