By placing ethics and sustainability at the heart of their business, Gemfields is altering the coloured gemstone market one tree at a time. We took a peek inside their eco-conscious way of life during a visit to the Montepuez ruby mine
Imagine being greeted by a sea of rubies. Sounds dreamy? Well, the highlands of northern Mozambique afford you that luxury. The red soil studded with rubies contrasts perfectly with the bright blue sky. Not only are these precious stones breathtakingly beautiful, they also hold a higher value than the diamond.
In order to truly appreciate these gemstones, it is important to know where they come from, considering most of us spend a fortune on them. On our recent trip to the Gemfields Montepuez ruby mine, we not only picked up a handful of these precious stones and admired their luxurious rough edges, we were also given the lowdown on the ethical practices that govern the mining process.
