“Trust the universe”, says Sanya on being where she proudly is now. Born and raised in Delhi, Sanya Malhotra always wanted to be an actor. She thought she had everything sorted post-graduation: auditioning for a reality show, getting spotted by someone, and that will be her entry into Bollywood. But the universe had something else planned for her and she is glad that it happened that way…..Here is Sanya on her Bollywood journey, wellness philosophy, haircare routine, and so much more.
Your first movie, Dangal, was a sensation. How do you think it has shaped your career?
I am what I am because of my debut film. It feels like a perfect debut for any newcomer, and I am extremely grateful for it because I got an opportunity to prove myself as a performer. There were a lot of newcomers in the movie and each one of us worked really hard because we knew it for the fact that this is going to be a one and only opportunity to prove ourselves. It was physically very, very tough because wrestling is a contact sport. I thought it would be a cakewalk for me because I used to dance before that, but I was completely wrong. I remember my coach used to shout at me almost every day saying that you look like a dancer, you cannot look so graceful while wrestling. We trained for almost 11 months before going on set and facing the camera. But it only helped us to get into the character physically and mentally because we used to practice with real wrestlers.
Who did you grow up watching on screen?
I did not really watch a lot of movies, but I remember copying all the actions, from dance steps to fashion. All I remember is that I used to enthusiastically run to the washroom after watching something on the television, and enact in front of the mirror.
If not an actor, or a dancer, what do you think you would have become?
I would have done something related to travel. I simply love traveling. I cannot imagine myself in an office, so that is out of the picture. I am quite a hippie in that way.
What is the criterion for choosing a film project?
I think a lot of factors need to be taken into consideration, the script, how much I connect to it as an actor, whether I can imagine myself in that character or not. If I am reading a script and I can imagine myself in that character’s shoes, I will say yes to it.
I used to enthusiastically run to the washroom after watching something on the television, and enact in front of the mirror
I have seen that part of my life when I had no work, due to which I appreciate and cherish what I have now , and I do not mind waiting for good projects to come my way..
What is that piece of advice you were once given, and you have never let go?
