The gut means different things to different people. For me, it’s always held three different meanings, each equally important to the bigger picture. First, there’s the simple meaning – your core. It’s perhaps the most important body part to keep strong to ensure your physical training is fruitful. Ab exercises, of course, are great for building core strength. If this is your aim, I recommend a variety of leg raises. I’ve always felt my strongest when I train the abs from the bottom up as opposed to from the top down. But we need to train for stamina and strength as well. This is where holds and planks come into play. Variations of standard planks, sideways planks and advanced planks (on medicine ball) are brilliant for these kinds of strength gains.
