Inmensa, kitsch, un bloque con suspensión elástica, dar vuelta en las esquinas implicaba hacerlo días antes; este coche parecía haberse inspirado en un librero. Demostraba que pese al estatus del que gozaba el automóvil como producto global del siglo XX por excelencia, en Estados Unidos las cosas se hacían de otra forma.
Esta postura un poco desdeñosa de “ellos y nosotros”, no comprende toda la historia (desde luego). No se suelen tener en cuenta los motivos reales por los que se tenían enfoques tan disímiles con respecto al diseño automotriz en uno y otro lado del Atlántico. Recordamos todo esto a propósito de Detroit Style: Car Design in the Motor City, 1950–2020 en el Instituto de las Artes de Detroit, en Michigan, una exposición que recuperó una selección de bocetos, autos concepto y modelos de producción para contar la historia de cómo fue que el automóvil estadounidense adquirió su imagen.
