Pero gracias a sus características de fácil lectura y diseño robusto y fiable, pronto se convirtió en el favorito de los pilotos y fue adoptado por miembros de la Fuerza Aérea de los Estados Unidos. Muchos de estos pilotos se convirtieron en astronautas y fue así como el primer Speedmaster llegó al 1963, orbitando la Tierra seis veces en la muñeca de Walter Schirra.
