Gérald Genta diseñó los relojes más codiciados del mundo. Conocido como el padre de la relojería moderna, el artista y relojero suizo tuvo la distinción de ser tan famoso como las marcas para las que creó. A pocos meses del que sería su cumpleaños número 90, está más vigente que nunca.

EL 7 DE DICIEMBRE DE 2017, John Reardon estaba hablando por teléfono con un potencial postor, poco antes de una subasta de relojes en Nueva York. Dicho postor tenía su mente puesta en un reloj en particular. En el lugar 67 estaba un Patek Philippe automático de acero inoxidable con una cara estriada azul/ negra y el número de referencia 571/1A, que forma parte de la colección de relojes Nautilus deportivos.

Los Nautilus habían sido la esencia del catálogo Patek desde 1976 y había sido producido sin interrupciones durante 43 años, como Reardon pudo confirmarlo, ya que estaba trabajando en Patek cuando el ref.5711/1A salió en 2006. Pero en el 2017, estaba trabajando en Christie’s como el director internacional de relojes, donde frecuentemente estaba a cargo de llevar a cabo las megasubastas de relojes que siempre llegan a los titulares.

“Recuerdo ese día”, me dice Reardon, desde su hogar en Nueva Jersey. “Era increíble que alguien quisiera este reloj, lo deseaba tanto que estaba dispuesto a pagar cualquier cantidad”. Aquel postor dejó una cantidad de dinero que indicaba que él compraría el reloj sin importar lo que ocurriera en la habitación esa noche.

“No puedo compartir demasiado, porque sería muy fácil identificar a esta persona pero, en pocas palabras, amaba por completo a este reloj. Su estética, lo que representaba y que no era algo que pudiera comprar fácilmente en cualquier tienda en cualquier momento”.
