CUANDO LAND ROVER anunció en 2015 que sustituiría al venerable Defender por una SUV ultramoderna y cargada de gadgets, a la que sería más fácil ver rumbo a un spa que afuera de un establo, la euforia por lo que parecía el inminente nacimiento de un ícono, rayó en lo cursi. Muchos observadores, algunos de los cuales aún sollozan sobre las mangas de sus chamarras Barbour White Labels, sintieron que la firma premium no había entendido el punto.
Resulta que Land Rover había visto muy bien los signos de dólar en el completamente nuevo modelo, lanzado en 2019 y que desde entonces se vende por contenedores. Pero la innovación resume muy bien la dicotomía actual en el diseño automotriz; ¿será que, a pesar de que la industria del motor se dirige hacia un futuro clínico y técnico, los automóviles tradicionales que nos hacen felices a muchos de nosotros son en su mayoría del pasado?
"Si observas el diseño de los automóviles modernos, todos tienen el mismo aspecto. Y así tiene que ser por las estructuras, la resistencia a los impactos y todo lo demás”, afirma Justin Lunny, fundador de Everrati UK, una muestra de la nueva ola de empresas que convierten viejos clásicos en vehículos eléctricos (VE) completamente funcionales. “Pero tenemos una oportunidad con estos hermosos autos que la gente todavía ama".
