Here’s why you should go for regular eye exams.
While most of us head to the dentist for routine check-ups, our sense of sight often gets overlooked. Yet, with our endless exposure to smartphones and computer screens – not to mention the strong Singapore sunshine – eye exams are more essential than ever, for both adults and children, says Dr. Claudine Pang, Consultant Eye Surgeon and Medical Director at Asia Retina Eye Surgery Centre.
For adults
Even if you’re not experiencing any specific problems with your vision, check-ups are still fundamental, as certain eye conditions don’t present symptoms, at least at the beginning stages.
“Retinal holes and tears, for example, occur at the periphery of our retina, so there may be no symptoms whatsoever. If untreated, they could lead to sight-threatening retinal detachment, which requires immediate surgical repair. Those with high myopia (near-sightedness) are at particularly higher risk of such retinal tears and holes,” says Dr Pang.
Glaucoma is another condition with few or no symptoms in its early stages, as it affects peripheral vision first.
