GET TO KNOW: Rhonda Patterson, the “Queen of Custody”

Rhonda Patterson has earned the nickname “Queen of Custody” for her aggressive yet compassionate approach to custody litigation. We caught up with the divorced mother of two to find out how she’s turned co-parenting into an art.

Age: 38

Family status: Divorced, mother of 11-year-old London and 7-year-old Drew

Hometown: Roanoke Rapids

Currently lives: Mint Hill

Currently reading: N.C. General Statutes

Favorite sports team: My daughter’s track team

What’s the story behind your “Queen of Custody” nickname? High-conflict litigation is a lot like chess—it involves strategy, and you don’t just get there in one move. There’s always a countermove to be prepared for. The queen is the most powerful piece. My clients have a powerful player in me, and I’m not afraid to litigate weeklong custody trials. I know the law, and I never stop studying because the law is ever-changing.

What’s the hardest part about juggling work and family? Saying no—and not feeling bad about it. I’ve accepted that I’m in this season of life where kids and work are my priority. I’m serve on boards and have evening meetings, so I have to say no to additional commitments.

A Cool Girl's Bedroom

WHEN DESIGNER JACY PAINTER KELLY, owner of Jacy Painter Kelly Interiors, took her family to New York City last summer, her 10-year-old daughter Lucy went crazy for the cool urban vibe of their downtown hotel room. It gave Lucy the itch to makeover her own bedroom in their Fort Mill home. She wanted more mature accents like silver wall sconces and velvet pillows, paired with punk rock elements like a graffiti-inspired bed frame and pink neon sign. Luckily her designer mom knew exactly how to tie it all together.
