Meet the man who puts his life on the line to save our oceans

Terence Ruis
The Sea Wolf

SCOTT CASSELL has a grip like a vice and the calloused hands of someone who has done some serious manual labour. He introduces himself to the journalists present and leans forward each time he shakes a hand, so as to be able to catch their names. He’s a little deaf at the moment, you see after recently rupturing an eardrum while diving, which then got infected as a result of smoke inhalation when he was defending his home from a forest fire. The infection was so severe that he needed surgery.

And that’s not the end to the list of unfortunate events. Cassell recently fell off his submarine while working on it, resulting in a level two concussion. We gape in horror when he tells us he’s diving again the next day. But he says not to worry, as he’s been worse off before. As a retired Counterterrorism Combat Diver with the US Navy, anti-piracy consultant, sniper, former Special Ops combat medic, and MedEvac Flight Instructor in the Army National Guard (imagine the name card), diving with a ruptured eardrum and a concussion is a walk in the park for him, really.
