Long term investment horizon does help investors participate in the wealth creation journey of good businesses. However, long-term investors also have to deal with an uncertain future. It is possible that a business that has a strong competitive advantage and healthy return ratios today may face challenges from new technology, changing regulation, business downturn, or entry of new competition within a few years. Hence, investors need to &ldquo;Buy and Watch&rdquo; i.e. Invest and monitor the businesses.However, when watching something closely the investors may be tempted to trade. Excessive trading can be detrimental to portfolio returns. Hence &ldquo;Buy and Watch minus Trade&rdquo;.4. What is your take on the financial performance of India Inc. for FY17? What are the triggers that you are looking forward to with regard to the markets? The FY21 results season is still ongoing but the numbers so far have been in line with expectations. Last year, around the same time we were worried about India Inc. having a negative growth in profits for FY21. However, every quarter since September&rsquo;20 we have seen upgrades come in. The majority of the earnings upgrades have been in the cyclical sectors of Financials, Industrials, and Materials. Businesses like Consumer Staples, Information Technology, and Pharmaceuticals have delivered a steady performance for FY21 despite the pandemic.<div style="page-break-before:always; page-break-after:always">While Q1FY22 will be impacted negatively due to the lockdowns, the economy is expected to be back on the recovery path from Q2FY22. Once we are able to vaccinate a significant part of the vulnerable population, the senior citizens and people with comorbidities, the threat of severe infections and mortality are likely to recede. This will help the businesses to move towards normalization.<div style="page-break-before:always; page-break-after:always">5. What are the sectors that you are currently positive on, and in which areas should investors take caution? I believe post the second wave of Covid, we will see a strong recovery in the economy and businesses. This will have a positive impact on the cyclical sectors like Financials, Industrials, and Materials. I am also positive on the CAPEX cycle in the country. I believe we will see government spending on infrastructure, private CAPEX in manufacturing, and household CAPEX in the real estate sector. Due to the sharp rise in, prices of commodities in the last year, there are many industries that will face high input costs and margin pressure. Some of the companies in the consumer sector, which are trading at high multiples and are vulnerable to margin pressure, are likely to underperform. Pharmaceuticals and Information Technology sectors have seen rerating last year due to their defensive business characteristics. During the economic recovery, many investors may switch out of them and move into the cyclical businesses.6. What would be your advice to retail investors? <div style="page-break-before:always; page-break-after:always">It is important for investors to set up an asset allocation strategy that will help them meet their financial goals. Follow the plan with discipline and resist the temptation of following the crowd or focusing on short-term outcomes. Staggered investments or systematic investment plans can be used to bring discipline in allocation and they also help in reducing the anxiety caused by volatility.7. 2020 was a great year for equity investors. What are your expectations in 2021, do you think the bull market will continue in 2021? What are some of the factors that will drive the market forward in 2021? There are no indications right now that point to the end of the bull market in 2021. However, corrections are part of the bull market and they can come in anytime. When a large part of the population is vaccinated, the economies will open up and businesses will move to normalization. This will lead to a resumption of trade and investment activity. For India, the government has been increasing the allocation of the budget towards capital expenditure. It has also provided a lot of incentives to the private sector to invest in expansion and growth.
