There’s no denying the power of wallpaper and fabric to really bring out the best in a space, writes Guinevere Davies

Wallpaper and fabric are traditional design elements that show endless adaptability, transcending trends with ease. If you’re looking to create instant impact and character in any space, then wallpaper with bold colour, pattern or texture and highend fabrics are the answer.

RISK MEETS REWARD

As intimidating as this may sound, choosing the right wallpaper or fabric for your space will make or break the design scheme as a whole. Cara Saven of Cara Saven Wall Design says, “A wall covering most often forms the base from which to start your whole interior project. Because it takes up the most visual space (other than the floor), it really is the foundation of the design scheme. Therefore the right wallpaper is critical.”

The wrong choice of wallpaper is a bit trickier to install, remove and replace than the wrong colour paint, and this is where the risk lies.

That said, there’s no need to fear. As with any home décor decision big or small, you can’t fail if you go with your gut, as Lemon’s Kevin Frankental explains: “I would focus on finding a pattern or design that really resonates with you, similar to the way that a piece of art does.”

Once you’ve settled on the look, the quality of the product is equally important, says Frankental. “Then, in addition to focusing on the design, also focus on the base material and the quality of the textile. You want something that will last. Rather spend more and do one room properly before moving on to the next space.”

Says Robin Sprong’s Nadia du Plessis, “Colours and textures can have a big impact on the overall look of a room. Whether you are playing it safe or taking a risk with a funky pattern, wallpaper always makes a big statement. It is something that jumps out at you and cannot be overlooked.”
