While a toilet is more a necessity than a nice-to-have, innovations can elevate this bathroom essential into a design feature. According to the experts, homeowners want hygiene, comfort, sustainability and convenience – all in one flush.

Bathroom basics are enjoying a contemporary revamp with the introduction of black ceramics and sanitaryware such as taps and fixtures, says the team from Geberit. Lifestyle Ceramics says coloured sanitaryware is also making a comeback, adding a richness of tone and personalisation to the bathroom.

“Aesthetics are always pleasing to the eye, however, functionality remains the biggest factor to consider,” says Kyle Jones, marketing manager for Geberit.

WATER-WISE INNOVATIONS

The Duravit team says contemporary toilets have been designed to minimise water usage. Only 4.5 instead of nine liters of water are required for flushing.

Toilets also come in new ceramic finishes that are easier to clean, requiring less water and cleaning agents. A WonderGliss coating that is baked into the ceramic hinders dirt and limescale from adhering to the surface, allowing it to be easily flushed away.

“Nothing is as thorough, as hygienic, as natural and refreshing as cleansing with water. “- Duravit

Another option is the use of HygieneGlaze 2.0, which is not a surface coating but an antibacterial ceramic glaze. Made of four different metal ions, and other components, it effectively kills bacteria and germs in toilets and urinals. Having an open, easily accessible rim area also makes it easier to keep the bowl clean, the team says.
