COLIN HARRIS

The work of Irish furniture designer Colin Harris is focused around sourcing local, beautiful, wild materials and designing with an ethereal simplicity.

‘I love creating timeless pieces that tell a story of local, wild simplicity. Using the materials that grow locally and wild in our environment and to show off their exquisite beauty in a simple and direct way. I hope that people will connect with these qualities and that the pieces resonate with them,’ he explains.

Colin has always loved designing and making things. From the age of 13 he had a workshop in his parents’ garage, where his engineer father and maternal grandfather, who taught him furniture making, honed his interest and early skill set.

He then went on to study engineering at Trinity College Dublin before training in design and making at the world-renowned Parnham College in Dorset.

‘At Parnham, I became passionate about designing with sustainable principles in mind through our design tutor Gordon Duggan. Other key people that have influenced me would be Ezio Manzini for sustainable design, Konstantin Grcic for his industrial design, Jim Partridge for his use of material, the sculptures of Alexander Calder, and of course, Eileen Gray.

‘I enjoy working with my clients to create pieces for their homes that tell their story and reflect how they live.

‘I will work with them to define their needs and to develop a design that is sculptural, beautiful and elegant. Finding the simplest way to make something that both functions and delights is a great challenge.

‘Clients can be involved in all of the steps of the process and follow the piece from start to finish,’ adds Colin.
