Dream Design

When the owner of this home decided to create the kitchen of her dreams, she turned to Ben Kerrigan of Kerwood Design whose expertise and ingenuity helped bring her vision to reality.
Ben Kerrigan

My interior designer, Deirdre Wilson of Wilson & Co. Interiors recommended Kerwood Designs,’ the owner explains. ‘From the moment I met Ben, we hit it off. I felt he understood exactly what I was trying to achieve.’

There were several elements to the brief, but overall design harmony was key. From the outset the owner was keen to establish a sense of continuity, an organic flow running from the front of the house through to the extension at the back.

‘The previous kitchen had been set in an L-shaped extension,’ she continues. ‘The dark cherry wood furnishings made it sombre and, although we painted and tried to modernise it, there was still a lot of wasted space, making functionality an issue.’

The re-design of the ground floor of the property resulted in a fabulous open-plan layout, a perfect setting for this bespoke new scheme. But maximising storage without sacrificing aesthetics or symmetry can be a challenge. Fortunately, in this kitchen, Ben’s creative input proved invaluable.

It’s tempting to call paintings by Ron Hicks “enigmatic.” The word comes from the Greek ainissesthai, which means “to speak in riddles.” That doesn’t work. Nor does “mysterious.”

Upgrade Your Problems

I spent all my money buying my first flat—which meant I had no money to fix my first homeowner’s problem. This was 2007, and I was a broke 20-something who’d pushed himself to the limit. I was sleeping on an air mattress because I couldn’t afford furniture. Boxes were everywhere. Then I noticed a leaky pipe under the bath, which created a soggy puddle. I couldn’t afford a plumber but didn’t want to introduce myself to the neighbors by crashing through their wet ceiling.
