Unbound: A Library Under The Shade Of Knowledge
Insite|March 2019

Envisioned as a place for celebrating the act of reading and freedom as an expression, a place where knowledge is free and ‘unbound’, a place where knowledge is empowerment, the pavilion ‘Unbound: Library of Lost books’ was designed at the Salvador Segui Square of Barcelona, Spain. Primarily programmed with a live-program of ‘reading’, ‘Unbound’ designed by Anupama Kundoo Architects furnishes an innovative approach in public library design which highlights the theme of liberty and the limitless nature of knowledge.

Themed on the idea of ‘liberty’, Unbound: the library of lost books is designed as an outdoor library pavilion which cherishes the memory of reading books. The nostalgia of reading a good book under the shade of trees has been metaphorised by the creation of this bookless library where people can come and sit and read, discuss whatever they wish to.

According to Kundoo, “Books, ‘the building blocks’ of society, are facing extinction. Transition/evolution in the ‘form’ of the book through time has led to books becoming lighter, losing their materiality, now often only virtual. However the act of ‘reading’ continues.

Books, as beings in transit, pass through the hands of many readers as in libraries, rather than sitting on shelves of owners, or still with publishers. ‘Obsolete’ books locked in storage about to face their end, are rescued from pulping, brought back in circulation, and liberated, and available for free exchange.”
