A Sense of Style

Two bungalows in Vadodara employ vastly different aesthetic styles as they showcase the skills of Uneven Interiors. While one is sleekly contemporary, the other recalls the architectural style of a bygone era. In both, however, there is a keen eye on the functionality of the spaces.

When Dexter Fer-nandes and Shourya Patel of Uneven Interiors were asked to design this five-bedroom bungalow, they realised that the design would have to be pared down and made as simple as possible for the owners. A primary consideration was ‘What else can we reduce?’ With a partiality towards the colour white, the clients were clear that they wanted to be comfortable with the architecture and interiors, rather than transplanting themselves into an alien ambience. The family consisted of two brothers – both married – and their parents. They made it a point to be together at dinner time every day; the garden was to cater to frequent guests.

So simple lines and neutral colours characterise the design. ‘In fact, one of the brothers wears white and grey every day,’ says Shourya. Make no mistake, though, the architectural execution was not a basic matter of four walls with a roof. ‘The interior experience of this residence is defined by its generous free flowing and bold transition spaces that maximise the visual connection with the landscape that is woven into every offset that indents onto each part of the house,’ says Dexter. Creating a composition of vistas, this home is flanked by north and west lawns. These gardens in the front and back together with the deck are congregation spaces which connect people.
