DREAMING OF A COSY SNUG OR LARGER SPACE WHERE YOU CAN ALL HANG OUT AND WATCH A MOVIE? WE ASKED THE EXPERTS TO SHARE THEIR TIPS

We have a confession: we’re big fans of having a grown ups-only living room and a separate family space that takes more than its fair share of rough-and-tumble and cosy movie nights. It’s okay not to want chocolate on your velvet sofa or a TV dominating a wall where you’d imagined a mirror or piece of statement art. But how and where do you start creating an inviting family room or snug? We asked two interior designers and a sofa expert just what makes this kind of room a success.

THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU NEED

‘We always recommend having a separate TV/family room or snug,’ says Céline. ‘This often ends up as a more casual space than a formal living room, often doubling as a playroom. Nowadays, we tend to divide a house based on how its occupants use it rather than opening everything up like we used to. We also try to avoid having a TV in the main living space as they become the focal point in a room, which is a shame.’
