Six floors up and part of the iconic city skyline of Bangkok’s City Centre, The Athenee Hotel’s Atheneum Lounge is awash in splendour.
Coffered ceilings echo the aesthetics of a Colonial era, clean, bright, and white; behind glittering hanging lamps and a sleek bar, a marble backsplash perfectly ups the ante. Custom-made bar tables dot the expansive, carpeted space, held up with the curious and yet wholly appealing silhouette of chess pieces from knight to bishop to rook.
There is a sense of presiding in the air, as if it were a space made for, and lived in by royals. It’s partially true, of course; The Athenee Hotel is built on the very grounds that had once housed a royal residence: the Kandhavas Palace, then-home to Princess Valaya Alongkorn, the daughter of Chulalongkorn, King Rama V. Respect and honour abound in the treatment of the space, resulting in an artful combination of cultures; Modern Thai with Colonial influences, all at once sleek, minimalist, and sumptuous.
