The humble wardrobe has grown up into its own glamorous domain, with today’s homeowners now finding creative ways to incorporate dressing rooms into floorplans, including ‘borrowing’ space from other rooms in the home to usher in a touch of luxury. Aside from potentially adding value to a home, a well-designed dressing room can become so much more than storage space. “Because we’re spending more time in our homes these days, there’s a focus on how we can make our living and sleeping spaces ones we can appreciate and dwell in more,” says interior designer and director of Studio York Architects, Jodi York. TAILOR MADE
“Before you begin building your dream dressing room, do an inventory breakdown of the percentages of types of clothing, such as work clothes, exercise, formal wear and so on, so you know what you are working with and what dimensions you need to cater to,” says Stewart of Horton & Co Design. When you divide up the space in your wardrobe, think seasonally. “Opt for high cupboards because you’re always going to have stuff that you change over with the season,” says Jodi of Studio York Architects. “Run the wardrobe as high up as you can and use the upper space for seasonal items like doonas and coats. Have a pull-down, where there is a bar that allows you to reach a hanging rail, for easier access.”
