According to Anthony Spon-Smith, co-CEO and chief creative officer at Coco Republic, slipcovers were developed centuries ago when royals and nobles would leave their summer homes and cover furniture with white linen to protect it throughout winter. “Often, covers were left on upon return the next season as it became ‘cool’ to be ‘casual’, and others soon copied the aesthetic,” says Anthony. “Slipcovers have always been about protection but have developed into a casual summer look.” These days, you can have custom slipcovers made to fit almost any sofa, chair or bedhead from a selection of fabrics and trims. “A slipcover very simply is a removable fabric cover for a sofa, chair or bedhead,” says Sarah Andrews, stylist, author and Airbnb guru. “It’s a great choice for those who are looking for a sustainable design option as you can update the fabric and the colours of your furniture during its lifetime or seasonally, and for those looking for practical [options] that can be home laundered.”
