Yet it&rsquo;s pruning time and I know that if I overlook this aspect I&rsquo;ll regret it heartily come summer, when branches and stems are longer than they should be and much less shapely, to boot.Last winter I didn&rsquo;t get around to doing much with the climbing rose, which resulted in a polite knock from the neighbours in June asking if I minded awfully if we could moderate its incursions in their direction. They&rsquo;re amiable folk and, in general, I would far rather people put in a friendly request regarding my plants rather than lopping things off and chucking them over the fence (which results in steam coming out of my ears in a cartoon fashion)!But the cherished sprigs of January rapidly become the sprawling, overbearing, shade-casting canopies of summer. So out I must go, chanting the mantra &ldquo;a place for everything and everything in its place&rdquo;.The fruit trees are easy &ndash; small and forgiving. Shrubs at the front of the house ditto, and it was good to remove the lowest branch of the sorbus. But the rose&hellip; in its context it&rsquo;s a beast and a poorly trained one at that! Thick, twisted stems at the bottom and overcrowded at the top. Too big a variety perhaps? Realistically, yes; but still not without merit.My plan is to tidy, thin and identify stems that can be trained and tied in. And, generally, encourage it to be a bit more two-dimensional, while retaining its role as a floriferous screen. A robust approach is called for but there&rsquo;s no need for a total hatchet-job: after all, there&rsquo;s always next year!
