Attracting attention to her courageous identity she is one of the sought after designers in the carpet industry.
We have recently met with Fusun Kodaman, who has been mentioned much about her carpet designs, to listen to her story about how she started in the carpet industry. She turned the art into a life style as is seen in her shining eyes and proved by her love for her work. She has a long past in carpet manufacturing as a capable designer. She senses the carpet while designing patterns, and puts her soul in carpet by molding her modern and liberal lines into her work. She has a massage to those who aspire her line: “Carpeting is a passion. You have to do it by love, high patience, and hardworking. You have to imagine first what do you want to at the beginning, and than start designing. Otherwise you make mistakes.”
How did your story of encountering with carpets begin?
My relationship with goes back to the years that I was drawing picture. My curiosity and excitement has moved me to carpet department in traditional Turkish art in university, where I studied in graduate programs. Then I spent some part of my graduate study in Ecol Nasyonel La Cambre Faculty in Belgium. I have been in carpet business all the time. Experience is the best method of learning. First I started to work for the largest hand-woven carpet company in Bagdad Caddesi, Istanbul, in 2004. It had been making hand crafted carpets in Nepal. Then I moved to another famous company, and I spent two and half year in Gumussuyu company, a carpet manufacturer in Turkey. I worked there as design director for Royal and Pierre Cardin brands for four years. My last stop was Empera, where I worked one and half year. Then I decided to work freelance by considering living my own life and being able to produce original and genuine works.
As I know, you haven’t started to be a carpet designer at the beginning? Have you?
