Learn how a Texas family rebuilt their home after a flood took everything.

PUMPKIN ABUNDANCE.

While Kim kept the indoor pumpkin usage to a minimum, outside she used an assortment of different pumpkins in abundance to make a dramatic and natural statement.

PULL UP A CHAIR. These antique chairs were another Round Top find. They face the kitchen to provide a comfortable place for guests to relax while Kim is working in the kitchen.

When Hurricane Harvey hit Texas in 2017, Kim and Austin Elizondo anticipated a flood of perhaps 6 inches. As they retreated to their second story, trying to stay calm and entertain the children, the waters continued to rise through the night. They soon realized that not only was the damage to their home going to be worse than they had ever imagined, but they would also need to abandon their home and make it to safety. “At 1:45 a.m. my husband blew up a twin-sized air mattress and pushed our kids to safety to the highest point on the street,” Kim says. Later, rescue teams in boats rescued her too.

ZONING OUT. Known to the Elizondo family as “the reading room,” this space is Kim’s relaxation zone and one of her favorite rooms in the house.

GATHERED. This Restoration Hardware dining room table is the perfect backdrop for warm fall décor and a great place for Kim’s kids to gather for crafts, projects and homework.

PERSONAL TOUCHES.

Next to these custom-made stairs is a bold accent wall finished perfectly with an antique Belgian dresser that Kim found at Round Top. The stair railing was something Kim dreamed up herself and completed with the help of a friend.

MIXING HIGH AND LOW.

This Pottery Barn credenza features a stunning Anthropologie mirror, antique finds and a DIY pot that Kim created herself. In addition to being visually stunning, the vignette is a great example of how Kim pulls from various sources to create a home she loves.

FIT FOR FIVE. In the living room, it was important for Kim to create a functional and comfortable space for the family of five. Swivel chairs, built-ins and a cozy leather couch all seamlessly accomplish her goal.

When Kim finally had a moment to breathe, safe with her family and several other families at a friend’s home, she reached into her hurriedly packed backpack and couldn’t help but laugh. “I had nothing but some Cheetos, a pair of dry pajamas and a magazine,” she says. The magazine was the 2017 Fall issue of Cottages & Bungalows that she had quickly thrown into her backpack amid the chaos. “I’d just purchased it at the grocery and hadn’t had time to read it yet—I wasn’t about to leave it behind,” laughs Kim. She still has it.

Almost four years later, after losing everything in waters that rose over 6 feet high, and going through the long journey of rebuilding, Kim has a deep gratitude for the process. “Home takes time,” she says. “Whatever your journey is, and however long it takes, sometimes it just takes time.

B&B: SHEILA TARGETS STEFFY

Now that Steffy caught Sheila holding Hayes, a furious Jack goes to see Sheila. “Jack threatens Sheila to leave town,” previews Kimberlin Brown (Sheila). “And as B&B fans know, Sheila doesn’t respond well to threats. She also wonders about Jack’s true motivation. Is it more about his son? Sheila knows he does care very deeply for Finn. Or, is he actually more concerned about Sheila going to his wife [Li] with the entire story? Jack stands to lose a lot, and in great Sheila fashion, she simply reminds him of that, like, ‘How dare you come and tell me what to do when I’m truly the one holding all the cards.’ ”
