Cottage Deco
DESIGNED BY: NADIA SUBARAN & KELLY EMERSON, AIDEN DESIGN
PHOTOGRAPHED BY: ROBERT RADIFERA
Layers of neutrals, elegant touches of art deco and a galley-style layout give this cottage kitchen a sophisticated and inviting feel.
The homeowners wanted the remodel to reflect their artistic personalities. The challenge for designers Nadia Subaran and Kelly Emerson was to create an updated, functional space that connected the original home to a 1980s addition while also reflecting the vintage style the homeowners loved.
The kitchen is a linen color, and we were going for a very subtle and layered tone-on-tone feel with the white porcelain chevron floor and the natural marble stud backsplash Nadia says. “Every decision was intentional and personal.
Tip Use a variety of neutrals in the same tone family to give your kitchen design a layered look.
LOCATION: Washington, D.C.
FEATURES:
• Galley layout. While many homeowners opt for an open-concept kitchen, the classic galley style was the only layout that would serve the functional goals. To give the layout a more modern look, Nadia and Kelly carefully selected details.
By adding distinct patterns and finishes, contrasting counters and high-end appliances, the galley layout is fresh and modern. Nadia points out.
• Backsplash. Glittering, gold-flecked mosaic tiles provide a bit of art deco flair and visual interest to the neutral palette. The touches of gold specks complement the Slivered Almond cabinets, Nadia says.
