What you&rsquo;re looking at above is Caf&eacute; Riggs, an all-day dining restaurant inspired by the 19th-century grand cafes of Europe. It occupies an imposing space on the ground floor of Riggs Washington DC, a new hotel based in what was once the Riggs National Bank. Known as the &lsquo;bank of presidents&rsquo; &ndash; Lincoln and Nixon are reported to have kept coffers here &ndash; these walls could surely tell some stories, but these days they instead gaze down at diners munching on steak frites. Still, the property&rsquo;s glory days have left behind a spoil of impressive architectural details that instil a sense of grandeur. The first thing you notice is the heavy garnet-coloured curtain at the far wall. It serves no real purpose other than creating a dramatic feel and adds to the theatrical vibe of this over-the-top room. Seating shifts between glamorous seventies-style club chairs and Victorian antiques, a combination that might sound incongruous but is made to work with well-paired velvet upholstery in a host of citrine, ruby and aquamarine tones. This might seem like a look that will draw little inspiration for your own home &ndash; after all, few of us have Corinthian columns accenting our sitting rooms &ndash; but there&rsquo;s something to be learnt from the bold combination of jewel shades, noble materials and pale walls. The cafe comes across as playful in its use of colour, but that&rsquo;s all been brought in through fixtures and furnishings; the backdrop, much like banks in general, is all rather austere and serious.</p>
