If home is where the heart is, then Julie Simonsen’s is unquestionably a certain pretty villa in a Danish fishing harbour. Ever since Julie’s parents bought it 50 years ago, family Christmases have been spent in the seafront house, just 45 minutes’ drive from Copenhagen. ‘I’ve had to update it since I took it over,’ she says, ‘but luckily my parents renovated it to a high standard, which has been such a blessing.’

Julie was keen to make her own mark on the house by sanding the floors, adding a bathroom and redecorating throughout. However, one particular aspect of her new-look interior proved quite controversial in the village. For Julie, the majestic metal bath that takes pride of place in the master bedroom is a perfect and practical addition, but not everyone agrees. ‘Many of my neighbours said, “A bath in the bedroom – how can you do that?” even though in the UK, where I used to live and work, it’s been popular in interiors for quite a long time,’ Julie says.
