Jane and Jonathan Chadd have created their ideal retreat by building in the grounds of an existing property
The beautiful coastal town of Aldeburgh in Suffolk has been a favourite getaway spot for Norfolk-dwellers Jane and Jonathan Chadd for many decades. So, 11 years ago, when the opportunity arose to buy a holiday home with Jonathan’s brother and his wife, they jumped at it. ‘It was only recently that we realised there was scope to build a new property in the grounds,’ says Jane, a part-time property manager.
As any new building would need to fit in with those around it, the Chadds brought in Robert Marsh-Fieley of Hollins Architects to create a design tucking the house behind a walled courtyard. ‘His plan featured wood cladding and a zinc roof that made the most of the space but looks like outbuildings from the road,’ she says.
